This is the first time we hiked this very rugged area, within 15 minutes of our house, and it was a nice surprise! There is no park map online but my iPhone app
has nearly every trail in the park (both blazed and non-blazed) so we were able to explore the area east of Mountain Way. We parked in the large lot on Mountain
Way, crossed the street and hiked the red-blazed Beacon Hill trail to the top of Watnong Mountain. Apparently George Washington's troops used this mountain as
a beacon to warn of the coming British forces during the Revolutionary War. After doing the entire red trail, including the short-cut to the top, which was quite
steep, we explored some other unblazed trails around the mountain.
You can see our track here.
Total distance hiked today was about 3.5 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
