Owen's Station Crossing

Owen's Station Crossing, Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge (8/28/2016)

Last week we hiked two trails in this beautiful wildlife refuge. We returned this weekend to hike another trail, which follows the bed of an old railroad.

Using this map, we parked in the dirt lot south of CR 665 (Bassett's Bridge Road) and headed north. Note that there is no path denoted on the map, but it's there, and a large sign introducing the area is across the street from the parking area. We hiked north, crossing CR 642 (the main entrance for Owen's Station Crossing) and continued north until we reached the south eastern corner of the Liberty Trail (which we hiked last weekend). At this point we turned back, retracing our steps back to our car and then continued on the Timberdoodle trail south, crossing Kelly Road, turning back when we reached the bench on the bank of the swamp/lake. The trail does continue about 0.3 miles further before ending abruptly. We were running short on time so we didn't cover that last segment. We returned back to the car from the bench.

Total distance for this hike was 7.3 miles in 3 hours and 20 minutes.
