Red Back Ramble

Red Back Ramble, Sterling Forest (5/6/2023)

For many reasons we haven't had much time to go hiking this year. We hadn't been to Sterling Forest since early fall of 2021, so we decided to head back today and hike in the Red Back area.

We parked in P16, which was totally filled with bicyclists at 9 AM. It was the same back in April of 2020, at the beginning of COVID. Using the NYNJTC map for Sterling Forest we headed west, then north, on the magenta-blazed Red Back trail to where it meets the red-blazed Hutchinson trail at its southern end. At this point we turned back, heading south, hoping to use a woods road that runs parallel, but it was overgrown, so we hopped back on the Red Back trail continuing past the Ore Roaster Ruin and then heading northeast on a woods road which was very easy to follow. This we took to the blue-blazed Munsee-Eagle trail. We took that east, then south, all the way back to the Red Back trail for a short segment back to the car.

Total distance was 4.6 miles in two hours and 45 minutes. It was great to be back on the trails, but the bugs were insane! Summer is nearly here.
