Kakeout Reservoir

Kakeout Reservoir (aka Butler Reservoir), Kinnelon, NJ (3/6/2023)

It's almost impossible to believe that we hiked around this beautiful reservoir almost fourteen years ago. Where has the time gone? So, on a day we purposely took off because we've both been so busy on the weekends, we returned on this cold winter morning.

Using the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Morris County Highlands Map 125, we parked in the pull-off near the southern tip of the water (room here for 3-4 cars, without blocking the gate). We headed to the water, first following an unblazed trail which skirts the bank, before joining the white-blazed Kinnelon-Boonton Trail. We took this north all the way to the Blue-White connector trail. Next we turned south and hiked the blue-blazed Butler-Montville Trail. We went as far as the penultimate vista point indicated on the map before turning back and retracing our steps. Fourteen years ago we completed the loop by walking along the very busy Fayson Lakes Road for a half a mile. It wasn't pleasant, given that there is no shoulder to walk on. We avoided that this time and got to see the views of the lovely water from both directions.

Total distance hiked today was a bit more than 4.5 miles in two hours and fifty minutes.
