LHT, Northwest End

Lake Hopatcong Trail, Northwest End (12/9/2018)

The first leg of the planned 40-mile+ hiking trail around Lake Hopatcong was completed in September of 2017. The leg begins to the south near the southwest side of New Jersey's largest lake, near the Hopatcong Senior Center on Lakeside Boulevard in Hopatcong. It heads north (on the western side of the lake) all the way to near Prospect Point Preserve, an area we hiked way back in 2011. Today we returned to this area to hike the northern-most segment of this leg.

Using this map, we parked in the lot for the Roland May Eves Mountain Inlet Sanctuary on Northwood Avenue and headed north into the woods on a private road (open for hikers, as long as they stay on the trail) to the Lake Hopatcong Connector Trail. This we took north to the Lake Hopatcong Trail, which we then took east to almost the end. Unfortunately we had to turn back, being short on time, before reaching Prospect Point. The trail, which comingles here with the Highlands Trail, was much more rugged than we had anticipated, with countless ups and downs, making the going slow. We'll defintely be returning to do the rest of it, most likely from Prospect Point. The trail is beautifullly blazed, making it impossible to get lost. There aren't many views but you do see Lake Hopatcong through the trees at one point along the way. You also get a beautiful sense of isolation. At one point we stopped and stood still and heard only a distant airplane. As a contrast, near the northern end there is some private land and today seemed to be target practice day at a local household. We heard dozens of rounds of fire as we circled closeby.

Total distance hiked today was 4.2 miles in about two hours and 45 minutes. If you want a good workout, this is a good place to find one!
