The Great Swamp, West

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, West Trails (12/17/2017)

Two weeks ago we hiked the eastern network of trails for the first time in many years. Today we returned to hike the western network of trails in a swamp much different than just two weeks ago. It was snowy and icy. Had it remained icy and cold, we could have completed all of the trails we wanted to complete. But it started warming up to above freezing and we started falling through the ice in several places. So we didn't do everything we wanted to do.

Using this map, we parked on the east side of Long Hill Road, at the trailhead for the Blue trail and headed east into the cold, snowy swamp. We made a right on Ivory and took that all the way to Blue. We turned left on Blue and took that north to Yellow, where we made a right. This we took in the clockwise direction back to Blue, making a left, and hoping to do the rest of Blue including the Red loop to the east. But the ice started cracking and we were up to our ankles and knees in water. So before reaching Red we had to turn back and retrace Blue, all the way back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was 4.5 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
