Lake Chillisquaque, Montour Environmental Preserve

Lake Chillisquaque, Montour Environmental Preserve (4/6/2014)

This was the first hike we did during our five-day stay in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. We broke up the 3-hour drive to Williamsport by doing this nearly 5-mile loop after driving for about 2.5 hours. This is hike #33 ("Lake Chillisquaque and the Montour Environmental Preserve") in the book Hiking the Endless Mountains (2nd edition) by Jeff Mitchell.

The lake, and the environmental preserve are owned by Pennsylvania Power and Light (PP&L) but the public is allowed to use the area for recreational purposes. The plant itself, a nuclear power plant with two huge cooling towers, is itself quite striking against the backdrop of the tranquil lake and forested preserve. The weather was perfect today with barely a cloud in the sky, the last time we'd see the sun until late Tuesday. We circled the lake in a counterclockwise direction following the Chilisuagi and Ridgefield Point Loop trails. The views of the lake were beautiful.

Total distance hiked today was 4.9 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
