Kakeout Reservoir South

Kakeout Reservoir, South (aka Butler Reservoir), Kinnelon, NJ (5/21/2023)

Two months ago we hiked along almost the entire bank of this reservoir north of Fayson Lake Road. We returned today to hike the trail south of that road, something we never hiked before.

Using the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Morris County Highlands Map 125, we parked in the pull-off on the southern side of Fayson Lake Road where the blue-blazed trail crosses the road, near the western bank. There's enough room for 4-5 cars. We headed south on Blue, at one point walking the shoulder of Miller Road for a very short stetch (less than 0.1 miles), then took an unblazed woods road west along the bank of a beautiful lake (where rowboats sat on the shore). We took the path along the southern bank all the way to the western bank, but decided to back-track after the trail was flooded in parts. On this stretch we saw a beaver swimming to his lodge on the southern bank of the lake.

Back on Blue, we continued until it ended, crossing Miller Road and then continuing towards the Pyramid Mountain area along the trail blazed with black dots on a white background. When we reached the orange-blazed trail, not far from Whale Head Rock, we decided to head all the way back to the car. But since we still had some time, we crossed Fayson Lake Road and continued on Blue to the exact point we stopped two months ago. Then we retraced out steps back to the car.

Total distance hiked today was about 6 miles in about 3.5 hours.
